The Demoiselle Crane, Anthropoides virgo, is the smallest and second most abundant crane species.

A crane of Asia, northern Africa, and Europe having gray and black plumage, long black breast feathers, and white plumes at the side of the head.

When first brought to France from the steppes of Russia, the Demoiselle Crane was so named by Queen Marie Antoinette, for its delicate and maiden-like appearance.
